Winter Wedding Attire Ideas

When you first think of a wedding you may think of an event held in the summer, however winter weddings can be just as magical with crisp air, snowy landscapes, and cozy vibes. With wedding attire more traditionally being suited for warmer weather, you may be wondering what to wear to a winter wedding — whether you’re attending as a wedding guest, as a part of the wedding party or as a bride or groom.

We’re covering all the best ideas for winter wedding attire that ensures comfort without sacrificing style, keeping you looking stunning (and warm!).

Winter Wedding Dresses

Long-Sleeved Wedding Dresses

Many couples choose long sleeves for their winter wedding attire which makes a ton of sense. They add sophistication and provide an extra layer of warmth, but don't count out a dress without sleeves because there are plenty of options to ensure you stay warm and toasty despite showing a little skin! Detachable Sleeves For Your Wedding Dress

You may be wondering where you can get detachable sleeves for your wedding dress! This is a great option if you’ve fallen in love with a sleeveless or strapless dress and want some extra coverage for any time spent outside. There is an incredible amount of options to choose from on the internet but these options from Etsy are some of my favorites.

Layering with Shawls and Wraps

This is one of my favorite winter wedding attire ideas. If you've been waiting for your chance to wear a faux fur coat, shawl, stole, or cape, consider this your chance! Or, opt for cashmere or velvet to complement your gown. Don’t shy away from adding some color here. Bringing in some gorgeous jewel tones or warm golds or pinks can really help bring your color palette to life.

Winter-Ready Accessories

  • Veils and Headpieces: Veils can actually double as some extra warmth covering a little bit of your head, neck, and shoulders. Choose a veil with delicate beading or embroidery that resembles snowflakes. Sparkling tiaras or crystal-encrusted combs also capture the wintry essence.
  • Footwear: Hosting indoors or outdoors inspires different recommendations. If you're getting married outside, of course you're going to want warm, closed toed footwear. And for any time spent inside you can choose just about any style that suits your fancy!

What Fabrics To Choose

Thankfully, there are a lot of good options for heavier fabrics. In fact, I remember trying on wedding dresses for my summer wedding that I couldn’t fathom wearing in the heat of the summer. Heavier fabrics like velvet, and satin are ideal for winter and most dresses have multiple layers and liners adding just a touch of warmth. Avoid lightweight fabrics like chiffon or organza unless layered.

Suits for a Winter Wedding

Velvet and Tweed Suits

Velvet suits or blazers in rich colors like burgundy, navy, or forest green bring an air of sophistication. For a more rustic or casual wedding, tweed suits add texture and warmth. Pair them with a wool tie or pocket square for added flair. Ladies, you could choose a satin pant suit with a stylish blazer or shawl to complete the look.

Layered Looks

Layering is key no matter what you’re doing in the winter and especially for weddings that are planned to split time between the snowy outdoors and the cozy, warm indoor spaces. Being able to shed layers as you dance the night away in front of the fireplace at the lodge you selected for your wedding will be key to staying comfortable.

Seasonal Footwear

Leather or suede dress shoes are great choices for winter if you’re planning to get married inside. A lot of couples actually choose outdoor events so if that’s you, opt for insulated shoes or boots and pair them with warm, stylish socks in muted patterns or solid colors to avoid cold feet—literally.

For the Wedding Party

Bridesmaid Dresses in Winter Hues

Rich, deep tones like emerald, burgundy, navy, or plum complement the winter palette beautifully. Bridesmaids can also wear dresses with long sleeves or pair short-sleeved styles with faux-fur shrugs like these on etsy for added warmth.

Matching Shawls or Capes

Coordinate matching wraps, shawls, or capes for the bridal party. This not only looks cohesive in photos but also ensures everyone stays comfortable throughout the day.

Groomsmen Accessories

Groomsmen can incorporate winter textures and colors into their attire with wool ties, textured pocket squares, or knit scarves. Coordinating velvet or tweed suits with the groom ties the look together.

Cashmere Bridal Coat

Winter Wedding Guest Attire

Dressing as a guest for a winter wedding can be tricky, but these tips will help you nail your look:

Formal Coats

Invest in a stylish overcoat or trench in a neutral color like black, gray, or camel. This adds an elegant touch to your outfit while keeping you warm during outdoor portions of the event. Bonus, a jacket like this makes for a great staple for your wardrobe for years to come.

Dresses with Long Sleeves

Opt for cocktail or maxi dresses with long sleeves or higher necklines. Fabrics like velvet, brocade, or heavy crepe provide warmth and a luxe feel. If your dress is sleeveless, layer with a chic shawl or wrap.

Winter-Friendly Footwear

Choose closed-toe heels, boots, or flats with non-slip soles. This not only keeps your feet warm but also ensures you navigate icy paths with ease. You may consider a footwear change if the event is splitting time between the indoors and outdoors.

Accessorize

  • Tights or Stockings: Add sheer or opaque tights under your dress for a polished look.
  • Statement Jewelry: Crystal or pearl pieces mimic the sparkle of snow and add an extra layer of glamor.

Practical Tips for Winter Wedding Attire

Plan for Outdoor Photos

If the wedding includes outdoor photos, ensure you’re prepared with warm layers, hand warmers, and even a stylish blanket. Brides can drape a white or neutral-toned blanket over their dress for candid shots.

Mind the Footing

Snow or ice can make navigating wedding venues tricky. Choose footwear with adequate grip and consider packing a pair of dressy boots for outdoor moments.

Stay Hydrated and Moisturized

Winter weather can be harsh on the skin. Keep lip balm and a travel-sized moisturizer handy to stay fresh and camera-ready.

Bring Extra Layers

Like I said before, dress in layers where possible. This ensures you can stay stylish and on theme even while you're outside — you don't want to throw a heavy winter coat over your gorgeous dress and totally ruin your look!

Whether you're walking down the aisle, standing at the altar, or dancing as a guest, your winter wedding attire can be both functional and fabulous. By using seasonal fabrics, incorporating stylish layers, and leveraging accessories, you can be sure to feel and look amazing through the whole event.
