Cookie-cutter weddings? Totally overrated. More and more couples are planning days that reflect who they truly are—and this Alaska Glacier Elopement is proof that adventure can be at the core of your wedding. Photographed by Meg Layman Photography, this styled shoot shows couples exactly what’s possible when you think outside the wedding-box: epic landscapes, experiences, and a celebration that’s 100% about you.

The adventure started the moment they got ready. Before their glacier hike, they helped each other get dressed right by their truck in the parking lot. It wasn’t polished or picture-perfect—and that’s exactly the point. This styled shoot is all about showing couples that your wedding day can be fully you. Don’t want to spend hours getting ready? You absolutely don’t have to.

The dress, suit and florals were all super simple. The dress was picked because of the sleeves and how it would look against the glacier — simple but still dramatic and gorgeous. The suit was intentional to match the blue of the glacier. Everything was designed so the landscape could stay front and center. Neutral tones, organic florals, and layered textures were chosen to complement the ice and mountain surroundings rather than compete with them.

Traditional wedding venues aren’t your only option, and that’s kind of the whole point of a micro wedding or elopement. Couples are drawn to these intimate celebrations because they get to step outside the box—including where they exchange vows.
The day was planned around the experience of getting married somewhere unforgettable rather than following a traditional wedding structure. The focus was on choosing a place that felt powerful and meaningful and letting that location shape the day.
For this styled shoot, Alaska was the obvious choice. And what’s Alaska known for? Glaciers. Meg Layman Photography planned an epic, adventurous elopement on a Matanuska Glacier tour where the glacier wasn’t just the backdrop, it was the reason for the whole celebration.
They left behind a lot of traditional expectations like a strict timeline, formal structure, and most all regular wedding traditions. Instead, they focused on what actually mattered: meaningful vows, shared moments, and celebrating together without pressure. It was more about intention than tradition. This is a great reminder that if certain traditions don’t speak to you, ditch them.

The ice climbing was one of our favorite parts of this day. The couple loves rock climbing and ice climbing, so had this been a normal elopement that’s what they would’ve done. It’s epic and it’s different but it’s what they love to do together. Plus, doing it in a suit and dress just added to the experience and made for some incredible once-in-a-lifetime photos.

If you take anything away from this Alaska Glacier elopement, it’s that you should plan your day around how you want it to feel, not what you think you’re supposed to do. Choose a location that actually excites you, trust vendors who understand non-traditional weddings (like the one that pulled of this incredible day), and don’t be afraid to let go of expectations. When you focus on experience and meaning, everything else falls into place.
