E & D's Black Hills Micro Wedding

One of the best things about planning a micro wedding is that you're not trying to squeeze your entire celebration into one day. Instead, you get the freedom to slow down, create experiences you'll actually remember, and spend intentional time with the people who matter most.

Emily and Dayton did exactly that. Their Black Hills micro wedding was less about following a traditional timeline and more about creating a weekend that felt completely true to them. From exchanging heartfelt gifts and exploring the mountains to saying their vows in a secluded ceremony location before ending the day with a private picnic at sunset, every part of the celebration felt relaxed, meaningful, and filled with adventure.

A Two-Day Celebration Instead of Just One

One of our favorite parts of Emily and Dayton's wedding was that they didn't try to fit everything into a single day. Instead, they turned their wedding into a full two-day experience.

By spreading the celebration across the weekend, they had time to be present for every moment instead of rushing from one event to the next. It also meant they could include adventures that simply wouldn't fit into a traditional wedding timeline. It's one of the biggest advantages of planning a micro wedding. You have the freedom to create a celebration that unfolds naturally rather than watching the clock all day.

A Private Ceremony Surrounded by Nature

Rather than choosing a busy ceremony location, the couple worked with their vendors to scout a secluded spot that felt completely their own.

With only their closest family present, Emily walked down a simple dirt path before meeting Dayton for an intimate ceremony officiated by her brother. They included a ring warming ceremony, exchanged heartfelt vows, celebrated with cake, and captured family portraits before heading off for one final adventure.

As the sun began to set, they returned to a trail that held special memories from an earlier trip together. There, with no one else around, they laid out a picnic blanket, shared private letters and vows, toasted to their marriage, and enjoyed cake while the light disappeared behind the hills. It was simple, relaxed, and a perfect reminder that sometimes the most meaningful wedding moments happen after the ceremony is over.

A Beautiful Reminder That Simple Can Be Incredible

One of the best things about this celebration is that it proves you don't need an elaborate venue to create an unforgettable wedding.

For couples dreaming of a similar celebration in Custer State Park, it's worth doing a little research ahead of time. Small ceremonies may not require a permit depending on the location, although park regulations still apply. Staying on designated trails, respecting wildlife, following Leave No Trace principles, and making sure your ceremony doesn't interfere with public spaces helps preserve these incredible landscapes for future couples.

Emily and Dayton's wedding is proof that with a little planning, some thoughtful details, and a sense of adventure, a micro wedding can feel every bit as unforgettable as a celebration ten times the size.
